Tall Ships Visit St Petersburg, Russia

Tall Ships’ Races 2009 Baltic international regatta.

The regatta will arrive in St. Petersburg on July 10, with the youth and maritime festival running in the city for four days.

Forty countries and over 100 ships will be participating in the competition. The regatta is divided into three sections, comprising two races and one cruise-incompany during which the ships visit the ports and the crews swap ships. At the second port the winners of the first race will be awarded prizes, while at the final port, Klaipeda, the winners of the second race and the overall results for the two races will be announced.

An intensive cultural program has been prepared for the young sailors, with each city competing to put its best foot forward. Fifteen museums in St. Petersburg, including the State Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Zoological Museum and the Kunstkamera opening their doors to the regatta participants.

Those wishing to make the most of the museum program will be transported to their desired destinations by special river buses, and as well as cultural events there will be sporting activities. The guests from the regatta can also travel on public transport free of charge. “These people are coming to St. Petersburg for the first time, and they are coming as guests — everything will be free for them.

“A special event will be a state reception held in honor of the captains of the ships. The organizers have invited Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to attend the events welcoming the regatta participants. A parade on the streets of the city will be held to welcome the rest of the crew. “It will be like a carnival. The citizens greet the sailors, and vice versa. And the parade will end with the awards ceremony for the winners of the first race in the regatta,” said Bredova.

This will be followed by a party for all the crews and excursions around the ships for members of the public.

The concluding event will be a sailpast “parade of sails” to be held on the water on July 14.
